the filigree motif engraved on the terminal of the pen of the year 2023 is inspired by the lotus flower (seschen), which in ancient Egypt was the emblem of regeneration and rebirth. in particular, the blue lotus was venerated, whose flower closed every day at sunset and sank into the water and then rose again at dawn. among the most important symbols, this delicate plant adorned alabaster vases, jewels, paintings and columns and was used as a hieroglyph, often also in connection with deities.
the metal barrel of the pen of the year 2023 is decorated with splendid hieroglyphics (medu netscher): the names of twelve ancient Egyptian deities are engraved in the carbon-coated and diamond-engraved metal. hieroglyphics are considered the oldest Egyptian characters, about 7,000 of them have been handed down to us. for over 3,500 years, hieroglyphics have been used primarily for ritual or religious purposes, but also to transmit knowledge across generations. This was how ancient Egypt managed to develop into an advanced civilization and administer the territory of the state. today we are able to decipher these richly detailed characters thanks to the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799: the imposing table shows an engraving in three different languages.
during the journey in ancient Egypt you meet numerous deities (alaliha), each with specific characteristics and tasks. on the dark barrel of the pen of the year 2023 are engraved the elaborate hieroglyphics of twelve legendary deities of ancient Egypt.
the cap of the pen of the year 2023 recalls the characteristic shape of its blue crown (altiyjan), which made it possible to associate the bust with Nefertiti. in ancient Egypt headdresses were important- In addition to the blue khepresh, the war crown of the pharaohs, there were the red deshret, the crown of Lower Egypt, the white hedjet, the crown of Upper Egypt, and the crown of atef, a combination of deshret and hedjet. the tall shape of Nefertiti'-s crown was particular. it indicated the fact that Nefertiti was in a position of power at least equal to, if not greater than, that of her husband Akhenaten.
the reconstructed lapis lazuli engraved with a scarab (cheperer), set in the cap terminal of the pen of the year 2023, shines in a brilliant blue. in ancient Egypt, the divine insect depicted on amulets, seals and grave goods was considered a good luck charm and a symbol of the sun, and embodied life and resurrection. when the Nile overflowed its banks, the animals moved away from the water, thus leaving men with the promise that the longed-for flood would soon arrive. at the time the intense blue of lapis lazuli was considered a new color, associated with water and the divinity of the night sky, and was widely used as an ornament for royal clothes and relics. we remember the imposing funeral mask of Tutankhamun, in royal blue, and the blue makeup of Cleopatra, who considered herself the incarnation of the goddess Isis.
one of the most famous and impressive finds of ancient Egypt weighs twelve kilos: it is Tutankhamun'-s funeral mask. the handle of the pen of the year 2023 is inspired by the gold and lapis lazuli stripes of the reproduction of the pharaoh'-s nemes headdress (from “per-aa”). multiple layers of 24-carat gold-plated metal rings and hand-applied blue lacquer rings recall the precious headdress reserved for pharaohs. Tutankhamun'-s burial chamber, lined with pure gold, was discovered in 1922 in the Valley of the Kings and contained, among other things, his golden throne and a chariot. being an important part of Egyptian religion, embalming and mummification of the deceased were part of the ceremony for accessing the afterlife.

The extremely durable, diamond-engraved carbon-coated matte metal barrel is decorated with engraved hieroglyphics of twelve ancient Egyptian deities and stylized lotus flowers representing rebirth.
